Red Cross nurses and volunteers during World War I from the American Red Cross Hospitals Nos. 6 and 7 at the American Red Cross canteen in Souilly Meuse, France on October 13, 1918.
From left: Anna L. Rochester, Gladys Cromwell, Elizabeth Strang, Helen J. Day, C. Wheller, Mary Palmer Gardner, Winifred Bryce, Anna A. Ryan, Julia Wells and Dorothy (Dorthea) Cromwell. Twin sisters Gladys and Dorothy/Dorothea K. Cromwell of New York, having seen some of the worst fighting in the war, jumped off their returning ship in desperation and from shell shock. They were awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French government.
